The story of Bay Rum begins with the essential oil derived from the leaves of the bay tree growing in the Virgin Islands, Cuba, Dominica, and other islands of the Caribbean. On the island of St. John, in March of 1718 (in what was eventually to become the U.S. Virgin Islands), a group of Danish planters from St. Thomas raised their flag at the first permanent settlement at Estate Carolina in Coral Bay. Over the subsequent decades, sugar plantations, cattle raising, and growing various crops sustained the population of St. John. Bay trees were plentiful and distilled Bay Rum became the signature product for the island. A fragrant liquid, Bay Rum was used for numerous medicinal and grooming needs, and was produced by local entrepreneurs for the island’s inhabitants and the world beyond. Though the primitive island distilleries ceased production of Bay Rum at Estate Carolina in the 1930’s, we celebrate the spirit of that time. With our new product, we have created a blend of bay and cologne, a more contemporary, prominent and longer-lasting fragrance, for today’s modern man. Available in 2 oz glass bottle.
